Street Webs

This quality represents the opposite of cul-de-sac. It is about joining things up and creating webs.

The most sustainable cities represent webs of connectivity, between people, communities, places and their activities. If you think of the most vibrant places that you have visited, the chances are, they had lots of small businesses and plenty of people milling around. This requires a rich framework of streets that maximize the number of walking/cycling/vehicular connections possible. Places such as Seina, Copenhagen or Barcelona, tend to have strong local economies and are, more likely, to be socially cohesive - possessing few ‘dead ends’, gated communities and, instead, have lots of permeability.
